Former President Trump came forward during a rally last week to warn that America’s economy is going down the drain and is set to face a much bigger disaster than a typical downturn over the next couple of months. His forecasts came shortly before new official numbers showed that U.S. economic growth is declining for the second consecutive quarter while consumer prices reached the highest level in a generation, and Americans’ purchasing power continues to shrink. At this point, there’s no way to avoid another economic slump, and what is coming next is going to be even more devastating than most people expect, experts say.
“Where we’re going now could be a very bad place.” He emphasized that millions of Americans are seeing their real wages collapse as inflation continues to rise and eat a bigger share of workers’ buying power. At the same time, worsening labor conditions have resulted in a historically depressed labor force participation rate, and the administration’s current push for a Green New Deal is only going to accelerate our economic slump given that the nation’s critical energy supplies are dwindling. “We got to get this act in order, we have to get this country going, or we’re going to have a serious problem,” he alerted.
In his view, calling the next downturn a recession is not enough to describe the difficulties we’re all going to face. Considering that virtually every sector of the economy is being hit by one disruption after the other, Trump argues that an economic depression that will rival the Great Depression of the 1930s is ahead, and a few days after his speech, new official numbers were released and they indicate that his forecasts might be spot on.
“On Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis released data showing that real U.S. GDP fell by an annualized 0.9 percent in the second quarter after contracting 1.6 percent in the first quarter. Two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth are a common definition for a recession, although recessions in the United States are officially declared by a committee of economists at the National Bureau of Economic Research using a broader definition than the two-quarter rule,” as explained by Tom Ozimek in a new article for The Epoch Times.
No wonder why so many experts believe things will get far worse as we move towards the end of the year. In his remarks, the former president also criticized the current government’s handling of the economy, blaming the Democrat-controlled White House for soaring inflation and growing economic imbalances.
The conspiracy first surfaced in earnest in June 2020 after the World Economic Forum—the prominent international non-governmental organization behind the annual Davos conference—introduced “The Great Reset” initiative, an effort to reduce global inequality and advance environmental initiatives in the wake of the devastation of the coronavirus.
The Great Reset conspiracy theorists argued that this announcement was proof that global elites want to use the coronavirus as a tool to reorganize global societies and economies to their benefit at the expense of ordinary people, with the ultimate goal of a global totalitarian regime.
In an October 2020 open letter addressed to President Trump that has since become a cornerstone for the Great Reset conspiracy, the Catholic Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano wrote:
“A global plan called the Great Reset is underway. Its architect is a global élite that wants to subdue all of humanity, imposing coercive measures with which to drastically limit individual freedoms and those of entire populations. In several nations this plan has already been approved and financed; in others it is still in an early stage. Behind the world leaders who are the accomplices and executors of this infernal project, there are unscrupulous characters who finance the World Economic Forum and Event 201, promoting their agenda.”
Vigano, a controversial Catholic leader who has spent the last several years mired in a series of controversies surrounding sex abuse allegations in the Catholic Church, paints a bleak portrait of the future, one where elites use promises of universal incomes and debt cancellation to impose a “health dictatorship aiming at the imposition of liberticidal measures” and demand the “renunciation of private property and adherence to a program of vaccination against Covid-19 and Covid-21.” Those who refuse will be “confined in detention camps or placed under house arrest, and all their assets will be confiscated.”
While the conspiracy transcends American politics, unsurprisingly some of the theory’s supporters have weaponized it against the incoming Biden administration, warning that it will be used to usher in radical changes, including using the coronavirus as a pretense to impose lockdown measures, destroying small businesses and weakening the economy, stripping away people’s freedoms, increasing mass surveillance and forcing vaccines on Americans. Similar to QAnon adherents, many Great Reset believers cast President Trump as the only person between the American people and these disastrous outcomes.
On November 16, the Great Reset began to trend on Twitter with nearly 80,000 tweets, many of which included a video of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaking during a United Nations video conference in September, saying that the pandemic provides an opportunity for a reset, “to accelerate our pre-pandemic efforts to re-imagine economic systems that actually address global challenges like extreme poverty, inequality, and climate change.” He also uses the phrase, “building back better,” which theorists connected to Biden’s campaign slogan, “Build Back Better,” and used as evidence that the two are collaborating in the conspiracy.
The throwback conspiracy theory known as the “New World Order” is enjoying a renaissance.
U.S. President Joe Biden name-checked the “new world order” conspiracy in mid-March at a Business Roundtable meeting.
“Now is a time when things are shifting,” Biden said when asked about the United States’ response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “There’s going to be a new world order out there, and we’ve got to lead it.” He also mentioned a “liberal world order,” saying it helped stop global conflicts post-World War II.
Biden’s comments came not long after conspiracy theorists pounced on an offhand remark made by a Ukrainian MP during an interview Monday with Fox News. “We not only fight for Ukraine; we fight for this new world order for the democratic countries,” Kira Rudyk said in the interview.
Due to the proliferation of fringe narratives on social media that cast Ukraine as a pawn in a nefarious scheme by a cabal of global elites, the conspiracy has gained new lifeblood.
“There’s a generic New World Order conspiracy, and then there’s a more specific version of it used by certain right-wing extremists,” said Mark Pitcavage, senior research fellow at the ADL’s Center on Extremism. “The more generic version is that it’s a shorthand reference to some sort of vague left-wing conspiracy, where the ‘elites’ are trying to manipulate nations and individual actors for their own nefarious ends.”
The benefit of the “generic” New World Order conspiracy is that it can assume the shape of the perceived bad actor du jour that posed an existential threat to the U.S. “Some people might bring Freemasons into it, or Illuminati,” said Pitcavage. “Antisemites would say it was Jews. Others would say it was Communists. Others would say it was Jewish Communists. It was nebulous, and that’s the advantage it had.”
The more specific iteration of this conspiracy evolved within the militia and broader patriot or anti-government movement, of the 1990s. Pitcavage said that in the 30 years that he’s studied those movements, he’s frequently run into references to a “New World Order.” In this version, the U.S. is already in cahoots with a New World Order conspiracy. “This globalist, socialist, tyrannical cabal that already controls most of the world,” said Pitcavage. “The USA was the last bastion of freedom, but now they’re collaborating with the New World Order to strip Americans of their rights, including their right to bear arms.”
For example, far-right state Sen. Wendy Rogers from Arizona (who was censured by her colleagues for participating in a white nationalist conference) reeled off a list of names she believes are part of “one big happy New World Order club.” Her list, shared to Telegram on Tuesday, included top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, billionaire philanthropist and Holocaust survivor George Soros, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, Mark Zuckerberg, the Clintons, and the Bush family. She also called the European Union “New World Order tyranny.”
Many of those individuals listed by Rogers are often accused of being members of another nefarious cabal, “The Deep State.” This conspiracy, relatively newer, is often used in relation to QAnon conspiracy theories. “It’s used in the U.S., in the context of a domestic conspiracy theory involving ostensibly bad actors,” said Pitcavage. “It originated with the idea of lifelong bureaucrats in government agencies, who had worked to keep the policies they wanted in place, regardless of the desires of a new administration.” Through QAnon, the conspiracy became more elaborate, drawing in a wider array of Democrat-leaning elites.
Putin, Ukraine, and the ‘NWO’
With the world’s eyes now on Ukraine, Russia, and Eastern Europe, some conspiracy theorists are promoting the “New World Order” theory to discredit widespread support for Ukraine, claiming that the embattled nation is at the center of a global technocratic cabal, which has infiltrated Western democracies. This narrative is also being used to shore up support for the increasingly unpopular Russian President Vladimir Putin; one recent poll found that 74 percent of Americans believe his invasion of Ukraine is “unjustified.” (Six percent said it was justified, 20 percent “weren’t sure”).
In these conspiracy theory version of events, former actor and comedian Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was democratically elected Ukrainian president in 2019, is actually a “New World Order” puppet, installed so that “globalists” can protect their interests. Meanwhile, Putin is cast as a good guy, on a noble mission to counter the New World Order. This narrative has overlapped with some of the QAnon channels, which have claimed Putin was invading Ukraine to eradicate U.S.-run biolabs, VICE News reported in March. (That claim, first spread by Russian state-run media, has been widely debunked.) Some have suggested that the conflict in Ukraine is a false flag to distract the world from an ongoing depopulation program, conducted via administering COVID-19 vaccines.
“Keep your head up and know that everything that is happening now is happening for a reason,” she says to the camera. “Stay unified and strong and don’t let the globalists try and control us.”
The phrase trended on Twitter in early March, after that clip from Rudyk’s interview went viral.
One guy tweeted a photoshopped image of Putin, shirtless, riding a unicorn over a rainbow. “Putin is on the side of good,” he wrote. “The side who is trying to wipe out the evil people in this world and put an end to the New World Order agenda.”
Given the domestic context and restraints of the “deep state” conspiracy, and with American conspiracy theorists trying to find their place on a global chessboard, the ever vague but reliable “New World Order” is making a comeback.
