13 Skills Needed to Survive In A Post-Collapse World – Like a Super Volcano, a Meteor impact, Major Electromagnetic Pulse Event, or Total Economic Collapse or Dramatic Nuclear War to Affect the Entirety of Humanity
Preparing for emergencies and disasters involves much more than just stock piling canned goods and freeze dried foods. Whether you are in rural America or in suburbia, consider learning some new skills this year. If you ever need to barter for goods, your skills may be the best monetary unit you possess. Oh, and they might even save your life! Having the proper skills and training will provide an individual with a well diversified knowledge base on how to survive during and after a disaster.
‘It would take a serious cataclysmic earth event like a super volcano, a meteor impact, major electromagnetic pulse event, or dramatic pole shift to affect the entirety of humanity. Man-made events like nuclear war, environmental damage, or total economic collapse, no matter how devastating, will be somewhat isolated and contained to specific areas and populations. Incidentally, every nation or territory that has experienced these man-made catastrophes has roared back to life in less than one generation.’
Have an Emergency Stash
When the economy crashes, mass job loss is going to ensue. Considering that many people live paycheck to paycheck, foreclosures and repossessions are going to skyrocket because people simply won’t have the cash to pay mortgages or car payments. Squirrelling a bit of money away each paycheck may seem difficult now, but it’s not nearly as bad as losing your home and transportation because you didn’t tighten your belt and do it when you had the chance.
Survival Situation An ElectroMagnetic Pulse
The electrical substations could go down permanently. Then what? No lights. No hospital. No trucks to deliver food. No civilization! An ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) has the power to disrupt, damage or destroy life as we know it through starvation, disease and societal collapse. Life will never be the same after an EMP, which is why you need to take immediate action towards a survival plan.
In an ElectroMagnetic Pulse, mankind will be trapped by the reliance on technology. Over the past decade, Americans dependence on electricity and the power grid has changed dramatically. Electricity started as a convenience and has transgressed into something that our very lives depend. It’s happened so gradually that most people haven’t even noticed that this society would live in a new frontier wilder than the wild West without electricity. A massive power grid failure could threaten to kill as much as 90% of the population.

Fire
The first survival skill you need to know is how to make a fire. Why? It’s hard to know exactly which skill is the most important in any situation but in general, I think making a fire is the most important. With a fire, you can keep yourself warm, purify water, see in the dark, cook food, signal for help, make tools, sterilize surgical equipment and protect yourself from critters. Having a fire is also a huge psychological advantage. Plus, it’s a manly-mans skill to know.
Alternative Energy and Fuels
Having the knowledge to implement alternative energy systems will make you a wealthy survivor in a “dark” world. You can learn to build your own alternative energy systems.
Gardening
In a long term survival situation, seeds will mean the difference between life and death. The only problem is, many have lost the necessary skill of gardening because there is a grocery store on every corner of the streets these days. It’s time to get your hands dirty and get back in touch with nature. Learning necessary gardening skills such as companion plants, crop rotations, beneficial insects, natural ways to replenish soil, and knowledge on proper gardening tools will be beneficial.HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN OYSTER MUSHROOMS ON STRAW
Self protection
If you are at risk from predators, two-legged or four-legged, you must arm yourself. This might be a sharpened stick, a knife, machete, shotgun, or banjo. Just have something to attack the zombies with.
Firearm
This is one survival skill that a person should be as proficient as possible. Also, knowing gun safety and being able to educate others is essential when a firearm is around. Originally, survival rifles were designed and built for those put in an exceptional situation where the main objective was simply to survive until rescued. It was originally meant for the pilots of downed aircraft and those stranded in the wilderness. They were compact, lightweight and often collapsible but could help the stranded pilot hunt for food and defend himself until he made it to safety or was rescued. They were the best rifles used for survival.
Ruger 10/22. This is really surprising as it is such as small caliber gun, only .22. It’s a simple gun that’s easy to learn with, easy to use and easy to maintain.
The AK-47. is one of the most widely used rifles in the world and easily the most recognizable in appearance and name alike.
Sig Sauer P226. A favorite with the military and law enforcement, the 9mm Sig Sauer pistol holds 15 rounds. It’s also available in .40 and .357 caliber ammo.
Mossberg 590 Mariner. As shotguns go, this one’s a monster. This 12 gauge has a 20-inch stainless steel barrel and is excellent for harsh environments.
Food Preparation
Knowing how to can and preserve foods to eat during the long winter months is essential. Just think of all the delicious jarred goods a person can store up for when their food supply dwindles in the winter.
One of the issues that many people have about prepping is a lack of funds. While this is certainly an important consideration, preparing a ten to fourteen day supply of food should not do too much damage to your budget.
For food selection when preparing a reserve food supply, most of the foods should be those that your family eats regularly so that you can rotate it right into your existing food preparation. As you use up rice or beans, or soup cans and crackers, just add them to the next grocery list. Doing this makes your reserve food supply a one-time cost. Are you ready for a Collapse of the U.S Food Supply System and a Coming Food Crisis?
Water
The next skill you need to have is how to get water you can drink. Depending on your circumstances, this one may actually be more important than getting a fire. You can go 2-3 days without water but you’ll start degrading long before that. You should be thinking about your water situation as soon as you figure out you’re screwed.
Hunting
As many are planning to hunt wild game for a food source, they will need skills on how to gut the carcass, skin the fur and properly cut the meat. The “hunter-in-training” will also have to have a proficient knowledge on the different types of hunting tools used to prepare animal carcasses (and these tools come in different sizes based on the animal).
